The Irish media announced that there are over 100 candidates of migrant backgrounds running in the county’s local elections. This is significant progress toward achieving a more representative and inclusive democracy. There is a question however that cannot be divorced from this conversation. How do we define a person of a migrant background?

The way we describe the world has a direct impact on the way we understand the world and how we understand our place in the world. Words matter.

I have been reflecting on my work of the last couple of years that focuses on creating inclusive and representative democracy to assess how we use language and how language is set in a broader context of democracy and hierarchy.

This podcast is not about finding a definitive answer, it is about reflecting on what we should take under consideration when working towards a more inclusive and representative democracy. That includes language.

In the podcast, I refer to two books that I recommend reading:

Deepa Iyer ‘We Too Sing America. South Asian, Arab, Muslim, and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future.’

Saul Alinsky ‘Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals.’
